Irony
Irony is the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.
In Frankenstein, there's a lot of irony. It's ironic that Victor spends so much of his time creating his monster, and then as soon as he brings it to life he's so disgusted by it that he abandons it.
It's ironic when the monster saves the little girl by the river and then all the villagers chase him away even though he saved her life.
It's ironic how all the monster wants to do is learn and be loved and everyone just attacks him or runs from him, and it's ironic how he demands love by murdering the family and friends of his creator.
