Foreshadowing
The definition of foreshadowing: a warning or indication of a future event.
In Frankenstein there are many examples of foreshadowing in the first chapters. In chapter 2 Frankenstein talks ill of his own curiosity when he was younger, speaking often of doom and ruin. It seems as though curiosity killed the proverbial cat for him and his love of science and experimentation is over. Additionally in the first two chapters his loving childhood is brought to an end when his mother dies, he calls it an omen of future suffering. In chapter 4 he locks himself up and devotes all of his time to his work, he soon becomes lonely and invested in his creation. He has an ominous dream about his girlfriend but when he kisses her she turns into the corpse of his mother. Once he finally brings it to life he is so disgusted by it that he leaves his home. |
